"Radical" China Mobile, "Undefeated" Huawei!
Recently, China Mobile frequently "hands out", since the acquisition of 5G commercial licence, three consecutive 5G orders.

In order to speed up the construction of 5G network, China Mobile responded quickly and resolutely, immediately launched the 5G construction collection bidding, including terminal, wireless engineering and core network. This is the first round of 5G centralized procurement plan in China after the issuance of 5G licenses.

Industry stakeholders believe that "China Mobile 5G bidding and purchasing has opened the ceiling of the planning market, and it is expected that enterprises related to 5G planning and design will enter the boom cycle from 2020 to 2021."

Core Network Supports 5G NSA Functional Upgrading and Retrofitting Equipment

On June 6, China Mobile announced the announcement of "Centralized Purchasing of Equipment Supporting 5G NSA Functional Upgrading in Core Network 2019 Single Source Purchasing Information Bulletin".

According to the announcement, 450 sets of MME equipments are purchased and upgraded to support dual connection, load migration, traffic reporting and security functions, 681 sets of SAE-GW equipments are upgraded to support traffic reporting functions, and the compensation flow processing hardware of SAE-GW equipments in EPC core network is also provided. Suppliers include ZTE, Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia.

There are 450 MME devices:

China won 219 bids with a share of 49%; ZTE won 22 bids with a share of 5%; Ericsson won 153 bids with a share of 34%; Nokia won 56 points with a share of 12%.

SAE-GW 681:

China won 369 bids with 54% share; ZTE won 21 bids with 3% share; Ericsson won 231 bids with 34% share; Nokia won 60 bids with 9% share.

From this purchase, we can see that China Mobile first adopted NSA networking mode, which is why?

The 5G deployment is divided into non-Standalone (NSA) and Independent (SA), in which NSA is an asymptotic entry, and the current 4G is the backbone of information control. The 5G carrier under NSA framework only carries user data, and its control signals are still transmitted through the 4G network.

Five-gigabit base stations can achieve some 5G functions in the area of gutta density. Its advantages lie in low initial investment, but limited function and limited transmission rate improvement. SA is to rebuild 5G base stations and fully deploy them (including new base stations, backhaul links and core networks).

China Mobile's 5G network deployed as NSA is to use existing LTE wireless access and core network to support operational management and coverage, which is the best strategy for the initial deployment of 5G. However, for future planning that must move towards SA mode, it includes 5G New Radio (5G NR) and 5G Core Network (5G Core Network, 5GC).

5G Phase I Wireless Engineering Design and Feasibility Research Service

On June 10, China Mobile released the announcement of "Centralized Purchase of 5G Wireless Engineering Design and Feasibility Research Service of China Mobile 2019 Bidding Bulletin".

According to the announcement, the estimated engineering cost of China Mobile's 5G phase I wireless engineering design and feasibility study service in 2019 is 19.257.8 billion yuan (excluding tax), the estimated engineering cost 2 (excluding tax) is 19.257.8 billion yuan (excluding tax), and the estimated exploration cost (without discount) is 200.5 billion yuan (excluding tax).

Requirements for bidding, bidders with qualifications include Class A design qualifications of the electronic communication radio and television industry (communication engineering and wireless), Class A of engineering survey (communication survey), registered capital of bidders must not be less than 30 million yuan, and no less than 800 professional designers of bidders, etc.

5G terminal (beta) procurement project

From June 11 to 12, China Mobile Terminal Corporation collected 5G terminals (beta version).

According to the statistics of "Global Internet of Things Watch", this collection needs to purchase 17,100 5G terminals, including 10,100 5G mobile phones and 7,000 5G CPE terminals.

Specific products are Huawei Mate20X 5G test version 5000, ZTE A10pro 2000, millet mix 35G test version 2000, OPPO Reno 5G test version 1000, vivo NEX 5G test version 100; Huawei 5G CPE terminal 5000 and ZTE CPE terminal 2000.

From this we can see that Huawei accounts for nearly half of the mobile terminals, and the 5G CPE terminal accounts for more than 70%.
Why does China Mobile urgently promote 5G commerce?
It is understood that among the three major operators, China Mobile is currently unsatisfactory in terms of the net increase in the number of 4G subscribers. In April 2019, user data published by the three major operators showed that China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile had 3.51 million net users, 1.36 million users and 161,000 users respectively. The net increase of 4.07 million users, 26.08 million users and -718,000 users respectively. It can be seen that China Mobile has been at a disadvantage in terms of both the net increase of mobile users and the net increase of 4.4 million users.

This result is caused by many reasons. The 4G technology adopted by China Mobile is TD-LTE technology, which is not as good as LTE-FDD technology promoted by the other two operators. The theoretical downlink rate of TD-LTE is 100 Mbps and that of LTE-FDD is 150 Mbps. At the technical disadvantage, China Mobile has to support the largest number of 4G users.

China Mobile has 1.48 times as many 4G subscribers as China Telecom and China Unicom combined, resulting in congestion of China Mobile's 4G network. Some industry stakeholders believe that for this reason, China Mobile does not dare to wage a price war with the other two operators. So the number of China Mobile's 4G subscribers even showed a net loss.

In addition to easing the loss of users in 5G services, China Mobile has the hope of regaining its advantage in 5G services. In 5G spectrum allocation, China Mobile has obtained 2.6GHz low frequency and 4.9GHz high frequency bands. Many insiders believe that with the strength and execution of China Mobile, if we can overcome the difficulties of deploying 2.6GHz low-frequency and 4.9GHz high-frequency bands in the early stage, we will crush our competitors more in the future, because it is leading in the world.

Moreover, China Mobile already has a large number of TD-LTE devices on 2.6GHz, and will have speed advantage in 5G construction.

China Mobile said it would launch 5G services in 40 cities by the end of September 2019. Whether in infrastructure or terminal equipment, China Mobile has begun to actively prepare to ensure the smooth commercial use of 5G.
